Councils that have implemented the WaterView standard have the following advantages:
The WaterView story
In 2012 AFI began doing work for a number of city councils supporting their process control projects with PLC programming and SCADA and HMI development.
It quickly became clear that a lot of councils were struggling with similar problems including:
-
High development costs for controls projects
-
Proliferation of nonstandard control strategies and systems
-
Inconsistent or inappropriate colour schemes
-
Cluttered pages that are difficult to understand and find relevant information on
-
Confusing navigation making it difficult to locate the relevant pages
-
Limited information available on the HMI or SCADA made fault finding and analysis difficult, time consuming and costly
-
Controls engineers often needed for tasks that could be addressed by operators, instrumentation technicians or sparkies
-
Difficult onboarding process for new operators while they learn a confusing and novel system
This situation was often a result of ongoing growth of process plant with additional functionality being added over time. Frequently multiple integration contractors were involved who had little oversight or guidance about how to best implement and represent the new processes.
Further complicating things is the continuous progress of controls technology and best practices. These were implemented inconsistently and on an ad hoc basis, depending on the flavour of the month.
On several occasions AFI was tasked with updating the control system with an enterprise-wide SCADA, representing multiple water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and reservoirs.
As a result of this experience AFI have developed WaterView, the multi-platform PLC and SCADA standard designed for the water industry and proven at multiple facilities, across many city and district councils throughout Australasia.
AFI is a leading provider of industrial automation in NZ. We offer practical, robust solutions to a wide range of novel manufacturing and process control challenges.
